Data Encryption

The following window is displayed when you select System - Data Encryption from the Maint Menu.

We would draw your attention to the effects of encrypting your data:
When you perform a search in 1stBase the sort order of the records switches to that needed to perform the search (i.e. if you perform a Post Code search then the records display in Post Code order). This allows you to step backwards or forwards through the records in search order which is useful if a partial search did not find the required record.
If the data is encrypted the sort order is by the encrypted data - which is unlikely to be alphabetically correct to the original information, therefore stepping through the records after performing a search will yield unexpected results.

Also note that encryption will help to protect you data in the event that the data is copied or stolen.

If, however, the PC containing the data (and probably a copy of 1stBase as well) is stolen then it is likely that the thief will be able to unencrypt the information. Particularly if they are able to work out a user name and password. (User names and passwords are encrypted in 1stBase regardless of the encryption setting.)
