Data Encryption |
The following window is displayed when you select System - Data Encryption from the Maint Menu. |
We would draw your attention to the effects of encrypting your data: When you perform a search in 1stBase the sort order of the records switches to that needed to perform the search (i.e. if you perform a Post Code search then the records display in Post Code order). This allows you to step backwards or forwards through the records in search order which is useful if a partial search did not find the required record. If the data is encrypted the sort order is by the encrypted data - which is unlikely to be alphabetically correct to the original information, therefore stepping through the records after performing a search will yield unexpected results. |
|
Also note that encryption will help to protect you data in the event that the data is copied or stolen. If, however, the PC containing the data (and probably a copy of 1stBase as well) is stolen then it is likely that the thief will be able to unencrypt the information. Particularly if they are able to work out a user name and password. (User names and passwords are encrypted in 1stBase regardless of the encryption setting.) |
