Local System Settings

The following window is displayed when you select System - Local System Settings from the Maint Menu.

The settings made in this window determine how 1stBase operates on this PC.

1stBase also has a Global System Settings window that determines how the system operates in a network environment. In a single user, non-networked, environment then the Global Settings can only affect operation on this PC.

Language

Sets the display language for the system. 1stBase currently supports English and French with Italian to be added soon. If you have an additional language requirement please contact us.

File Locations - Data

Determines where the 1stBase data files are located. On a standalone system they will generally be in C:\Program Files\1stBase\Data. In a networked environment this path will have to point to the location of the Files on another PC or Server.
Note: In a network environment you can either use a mapped drive or a UNC path (such as \\Server\1stBase) for the data file path. We recommend that a UNC path is used as you do not need to map a drive letter in order to use it. Also windows can sometimes 'forget' to restore mapped drives and using a UNC obviates this problem.
(UNC stands for 'Universal Naming Convention' and is the way that the location of a network resource is specified.)

Max S/N Length

Specifies the maximum length of machine serial numbers.
The maximum length of a serial number is 20 characters. However you may want to reduce this to the known length of your machine serial numbers.

Record Select Warning Threshold

If you use Report Criteria to select a number of records for printing then it is possible that you may select more records than you actually want (e.g. if you enter no criteria you will select every customer in the system). 1stBase displays a warning message if the number of records selected exceeds the number you enter here and gives you the option to abort the print run.

Printing

Default Font: Sets the font that is used to print all reports.
Print Report Borders: When selected prints table borders on all reports - can be turned off to save ink!

TelMon Interface - On Call Receipt

If you use TelMon (Caller ID interface) then this setting determines how 1stBase handles a telephone call notification.

Save Window Positions...

If selected then 1stBase saves the positions of the main windows when it is closed down (or when the main customer window is closed). When 1stBase is restarted the windows will relocate to the position they were last in.

Display Function Key List

The main customer windows use function keys for quick access to some search and print functions. If this option is selected then a reminder bar is displayed at the bottom of the main window.

Record Locking

For a network environment: If selected (the default setting) then 1stBase attempt to lock a record as soon as you display it. A successful lock is indicated by the 'padlock' icon showing in the toolbar.
The database locks records in 'pages' and each page may contain up to 20 records. It is therefore possible to lock out other users (or be locked out) by being on an adjacent record.
This locking mechanism can also slow 1stBase performance. An alternative is to turn off locking and the effect of this is that the lock is only attempted at the moment 1stBase tries to write record changes.
The trade-off with not using locking is that you will not be warned if another user has changed the information just prior to your changes being made (which will happen with locking on).

Log System Actions...

This is for Shire debugging use and should not be turned on unless requested.
